The general types of these rodents that exist in your home can include the Norway rat, the roof (or black) rat and the house mouse. Here are some simple rules of thumb you can adopt to prevent a rodent invasion in your home:

- Store all your accessible food in rodent-proof containers such as glass or metal

- Place your trash in tightly covered metal cans to prevent smells from escaping or potential rodent entry.

Change the Wheels

Check the wheels for wear and replace when the inside edges have a shaved off look or when you can hardly read the writing on the sides of the wheels.

Wheel Nuts

Every three or four months check the wheel nuts. If you skate a lot you should check them more often. Tighten with a half inch wrench just enough that they have no play but not tight enough to prevent the wheels rolling smoothly.

Toe Stoppers

Roller skates have two types of stoppers, Carrera types that are adjustable and non adjustable types. The non adjustable types need to be checked weekly as they work lose from the vibrations caused by stopping frequently. If they are loose use a screwdriver to tighten them as tight as possible.

Adjustable types of toe stoppers do not become loose from vibrations so need much less frequent checks. Once every six months should be enough. If they need adjusting loosen the nut on the base of the stopper and use your hand to adjust the height.

Trucks

Trucks can be adjusted for flexibility and control. The looser they are the more flexible, but control is harder, especially when skating fast. If the trucks are tighter flexibility is reduced but control is easier. It is a matter of preference and skating style so experiment until the amount of flexibility suits your style.

Inverted kingpins are tightened with a wrench and do not have a locking nut. Standard kingpins have a locking nut which must first be loosened with a wrench. The king pin is then turned to adjust the tension. After adjusting the trucks make sure that the locking nut is re-tightened.

Adjusting the Plates

The plates are adjustable on some skates, for instance Soul Train and Blue Love makes. Independent adjustments of the trucks can then be made. This is particularly useful for artistic dancing and freestyle skating. For tight turns and spins a narrower setting is used. For most recreational skating a wider setting will be more appropriate and this will be the setting of most newly purchased skates. Experiment with the width of the trucks if you have adjustable ones by making small changes and testing the feel and control.

They are adjusted by loosening the locking nut on the base of the truck with a wrench then adjusting the spacing by moving the whole assembly on its track. The locking nut must be securely tightened after adjusting and checked monthly to make sure it has not worked loose.

When to Change the Bearings

After about a year, or six months if you skate a lot, the bearings will need to be changed. When the bearings start to make a lot of noise and skating is no longer smooth you will know it is time for them to be changed. The bearings ensure that the skates run smoothly. On each wheel a casing holds the ball bearings and they are damaged by sand or dirt or when being used when the ground is wet. Bearings are readily available and can be easily changed. The standard size is 8mm but check the size of your skates before you purchase.

How to Change the Bearings

1. Using a wrench remove the axle and pull out the front wheel
2. Pop off the bearings from both sides of the wheel.
3. Place the new bearings onto the wheel and replace the wheel in the frame.
4. Re-tighten the axle with the wrench. For aluminium spacers tighten the bolts as much as possible. For plastic spacers tighten as much as possible then slightly loosen.
5. Check that the wheels can spin freely. If necessary loosen the axle bolts slightly. Tighten the bolts more if wobbling occurs.
6. Repeat the steps for the back wheels.

In 1894 he trademarked the term Favrile, a word form the French meaning handmade which he applied to all his enamel, glass and pottery products. From 1895 his company produced stained glass, lamps and other interior decorations.

Today a comprehensive collection of Tiffany's work is housed in Florida at the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. Included are examples of Tiffany lead glass windows. lamps, paintings, pottery, jewelry and more. The interior of a chapel, designed for the World's Columbian Exposition which was held in Chicago in 1893, can also be seen there. Glass panels originally placed in the home of Louis, Laurelton Hall, are also exhibited at the museum.

The company founded by his father, the Tiffany Company, also sold his produced and in 1902, after the death of his father, he became the Artistic Director. His company Tiffany Studios ceased business in 1932.

He may have been inspired by a visit to Europe in 1865 when he visited the Victoria and Albert Museum and admired the medieval glass and the large collection of Syrian and Roman glassware. He became convinced that the quality of the stained glass being produced could be improved tremendously.

Opening his own glass making factories and the famous Tiffany Studio he began to produce stained glass that was not painted as other contemporary glass but instead the glass itself transmitted the colours and textures. His now famous Favrile glass was born! He went on to produce the exquisite stained glass windows, lamps, jewelry and other decorative items for which he is still famous today.

Favrile Glass

Tiffany patented the name Favrile in 1880. The name itself is from a French word that means handmade and Favrile glass has an iridescent quality that gives some opacity to the glass and makes it shimmer. Favrile glass is made by mixing together coloured glass while it is molten.

Opalescent Glass

Glass with more than one colour is called opalescent glass. It was used as the basis for all Tiffany glass and is made by fusing together different coloured glasses while they are molten. Opalescent glass was used in England from around 1860 by Bayne, Butler and Heaton in studios in England and it became increasingly popular.

Ripple Glass

Ripple glass was used by Tiffany to suggest water or the veins of leaves. It has a texture that looks like surface waves and is made by spinning a sheet of glass on a roller. The roller moves forward but it spins faster so that a ripple effect is created.

The method to make ripple glass used by Tiffany was lost when the Tiffany Studios closed in 1928. It was made again i
n the 1960's at Oroboros Glass by Eric Lovell who reinvented the method.

Fracture Glass

An irregular pattern of thin glass wafers are attached to the surface of a sheet of glass in this type of Tiffany glass. It was used by Tiffany to suggest leaves and twigs seen from a distance. A bubble of molten glass is blown which is cooled then hardened. The thin walled bubble is broken into irregular shards that are fused on to molten glass.

Streamer Glass

Streamer glass has string pattern on the surface that suggest twigs, grass etc. It is made using a pontile which picks up the glass and is then swung to stretch the glass into thin strings. These are then attached by pressing onto molten glass sheets.

Ring Mottle Glass

Ring mottle glass was invented at the beginning of the twentieth century and is formed by treating area of glass by heat so that a mottle effect is produced.

Drapery glass

This type of glass is used to suggest folded fabric and was used by Tiffany to represent flowing robes and angel's wings. His famous church windows use drapery glass to stunning effect. Drapery glass is difficult to make and requires a high degree of skill. the entire sheet of molten glass is manipulated to produce the folds while a small roller is forced over the sheet to produce ripples. When the glass cools and hardens the ripples become permanent. Drapery glass is essentially handmade and a such each piece is unique.
