Chihuahua Mixed Breeds Make Ideal Pets
Sep 9th, 2008 | By Sandra Dean | Category: PetsChihuahua mixed breeds belong in the category of designer dog breeds. So you get crossbred dogs and from them you get designer puppies. An experienced dog breeder with a good knowledge about canine genetics and health issues will know exactly how to cross purebred dogs. The result can be an adorable breed of mixed puppies that live long and are healthy, intelligent and affectionate. Some of them are even hypoallergenic. Before you buy a puppy which is a Chihuahua mixed breed, choose the right breeder, because he is as important for a cross breed as for a designer breed.
Of course there are certain problems that the dog breeder can face. For example, the dogs may not be 100% purebred, which reduces the authenticity of the match. The new designer puppy could then be a product of a multi generation cross. The American Canine Hybrid Club has published a list of hybrid crosses of purebred dogs. Amongst the list of the Chihuahua mixed breeds, the Chiranian, is the most common one, which is a cross between a Chihuahua and a Pomeranian.
Buy your designer puppy only from a well-known dog breeder. He should be able to offer healthy, home-raised and well-socialized puppies. Common cross breeds with the Chihuahua, which the American Canine Hybrid Club recognizes, consists of about fifteen breeds. The Chihuahua with the Dachshund is called the Chiweenie and with the Jack Russell Terrier the breed is called Jack Chi. The cross between a Chihuahua and a Japanese Chin is the Chin-wa and that with a Maltese is the Malchi.
The cross breeding between the Chihuahua and other dogs gives rise to a totally new breed of dogs and each one has a different name. So the Terriers that are crossed with the Chihuahua are called Jack Chi, having been crossed with a Jack Terrier. The Rat-Cha gets its name because of the cross with the Rat Terrier and the Taco Terrier is the result of the cross with the Toy Fox Terrier. Another Terrier recommended for cross breeding with the Chihuahua is the Yorkshire terrier and the newly bred puppy is called the Chorkie.
The other recommendations of the Club are crossbreeds with the Dachshund, the Japanese Chin, the Maltese and also the MinPin and the Papillon. The cross breed of the poodle and the Chihuahua is called the Wapoo.
When there is cross breeding, such as with a Chihuahua mix, the puppy has the characteristics of both breeds. It is the job of the dog breeder to make an idealistic match, so that the new breed turns out to be healthy and can enjoy a long life. So it is hybrid vigor that each dog breeder is looking out for.
The Chihuahua mix breeds are also popular among Americans, especially the cross breed of the poodle and the Chihuahua. In this combination the new breed has the characteristics of the sprightly and lively Chihuahua and the sedate and intelligent traits of the Poodle.
Basically the intention of cross breeding is hybrid vigor. The dog breeder wants to bring out the best of each breed and tries out the best combinations. Health and long life are important for the dog, because that is what a dog owner is looking for. As a dog, the Chihuahua is very playful and extremely lovable. It is very attached to its master and the attachment sometimes borders on jealousy. Each dog owner has to spend enough time with the dog, so that it also feels loved and wanted.
